TRIAD STAGE ANNOUNCES 2012-2013 MAINSTAGE SEASON ...

The 12th?season transports Greensboro audiences to?the Broadway stage, the high seas, the Mississippi Delta, the streets of London and the mountains of East Tennessee.

(Greensboro, NC) ? Season Passes to?Triad Stage?s 2012-2013 MainStage are on sale now to the general public. The 12th?season begins September 2, 2012. ?This season is about transformation,? says Triad Stage Founding Artistic Director, Preston Lane. ?It is about the hope that we all have in the great potential to change, to be better, to be different, to wake up and suddenly see life in a brand new way.?

The 2012-2013 MainStage Season features five uniquely diverse plays: a comedy-drama of character by Alice Childress; a theatrical escapade by Donald Margulies; a Southern gothic by Tennessee Williams; a Broadway legend by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe; and a world-premiere redneck romance by Preston Lane.

?It?s fitting that our 12th?Season is focused on transformation,? says Triad Stage Founding Managing Director. ?Triad Stage has been at the center of the transformation of downtown Greensboro and has had a positive impact on the entire Triad arts community.?

Trouble in Mind

A Comedy-Drama of Character

By Alice Childress

This time will be different.

1957. Rehearsals begin on what everyone hopes will be the Great White Way?s next big hit?a topical drama ripped from the headlines. But social norms and prejudices collide as the company of aspiring stars, hard-edged veterans and hopeful dreamers set out to make a play. At the heart of it all is Wiletta Mayer, a gifted African-American actress with the chance to finally play the lead role in a Broadway show, if she?s willing to compromise her principles. It?s a groundbreaking backstage satire of egos and attitudes and an insightful look at who we are and who we want to be. This production is sponsored by?Lincoln Financial Foundation.?Trouble in Mind?runs September 2 ? 23, 2012. Opening night is Friday, September 7, 2012.

?Trouble in Mind?is a lost American masterpiece?a revolutionary play when it premiered 55 years ago and still revolutionary today?addressing who we are as Americans and how we dream the American dream,? Lane says of Alice Childress?s play. ?It is one of those wonderful plays that can both promote dialogue in our audience and at the same time be deeply, wonderfully entertaining.?

Shipwrecked!

It?s in the telling; not the tale.

Hear Louis de Rougemont?s story of survival in the Coral Sea as he battles typhoons, monstrous killer octopi and fierce cannibals in this rip-roaring delight for adventurers of all ages. Upon Louis?s return to civilization thirty years later, the account of his escapades makes him an instant celebrity. But was it real or just a figment of his imagination? ?Shipwrecked!?is such a celebration of theatrical storytelling and what we can do when we use our imaginations. It is a delightful play and perfect for the entire family,? Lane states. ?It?s an unforgettable high seas adventure that, like?Around the World in 80 Days, is sure to become an audience favorite.?

Kingdom of Earth

A Southern Gothic

By Tennessee Williams

Torn between two brothers.

Williams? rarely-seen masterpiece is a battle of wills and a race against the inevitable. With little time left, young Lot returns to the Mississippi Delta to reclaim his ancestral home just as rising storm waters are about to consume it. He arrives with his new bride, Myrtle, and the all-consuming memories of his late mother. Caught up in her own romantic fantasies and the hope of a happy life, Myrtle soon discovers that Lot only married her to keep the property from its long-time caretaker, his embittered half-brother, Chicken. As the rain falls and the river threatens to flood the land, the three engage in a brutal, comic and intensely shocking power play for possession of all they?ve ever know.?Kingdom of Earth?runs February 10 ? March 3, 2013. Opening night is Friday, February 15, 2013.

Lane describes his love for Tennessee Williams: ?We?ve done a great number of Williams? plays here at Triad Stage, from our first production,?Suddenly Last Summer, in 2002 to?The Glass Menagerie?in our 10th?anniversary season. He is the signature Southern writer for Triad Stage.?Kingdom of Earth?is filled with some of the best characters Williams ever wrote and a story that is both hilariously funny and highly sensual. I?m delighted that Greensboro audiences will get to see this very neglected, very rarely produced masterpiece.?

Book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner

Music by Frederick Loewe

Adapted from George Bernard Shaw?s play?Pygmalion

Dance all night.

Welcome to one of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time filled with delightful characters and unforgettable songs. Henry Higgins is rich. Eliza Doolittle is poor. He?s proper. She?s common. He?s education. She?s streetwise. But a boastful bet will change both their lives forever. As he transforms the lowly flower girl into a sophisticated lady, they discover more about themselves than they ever expected. ?My Fair Lady?is a great example of what Triad Stage does best,? explains Lane, ?which is taking a classic play like?Pygmalion?by George Bernard Shaw and transforming it into something different.? Lane describes Triad Stage?s take on the Broadway legend, ?It?s still going to be the wonderful songs, the delightful story, the great costumes, all of that; but we?re reducing the standard orchestra to two pianos and creating a great chamber musical feel that?s going to bring our space alive with this amazing story just in time for spring.?

Tennessee Playboy

The world premiere of a Redneck Romance

By Preston Lane

Freely adapted from J. M. Synge?s?The Playboy of the Western World

Everyone loves a bad boy.

It?s just another rainy night at a 24-hour truck stop in East Tennessee when a stranger staggers in with a shocking tale of a murder most foul. He killed his father, he claims?knocked him over the head and left him for dead. Desperate, Chuck Macadie begs for a place to hide. His story is so thrilling and his deed so daring that instead of turning him over to the law, the locals embrace him as hero. But his fortunes change when his ?dead? father suddenly appears. This world-premiere adaptation is a celebration of first love, tall tales and second chances.?Tennessee Playboy?runs June 9 ? 30, 2013. Opening night is Friday, June 14, 2013.

?The play that?Tennessee Playboy?is based on is one of the classic comedies of all time?a 1907 play by J.M. Synge called? The?Playboy of the Western World. When it opened in the Abbey Theater in Ireland it sparked riots; now, we hope that?Tennessee Playboy?won?t create a riot in Greensboro, but we know it will be as funny and as exciting for our audiences as?The?Playboy of the Western World?has proved to be for generations,? says Lane of the classic comedy. ?However, we?re setting?Tennessee Playboy?at the tail end of the 20th?century in East Tennessee. The play is going to be punctuated with a great musical score?not provided by live musicians?but by the jukebox located on the truck stop stage set which plays the great, classic country music of the 1970s.?

And returning to Triad Stage, the new holiday tradition?

A Christmas Carol

A Holiday Tale

By Charles Dickens

Adapted by Preston Lane

Tonight changes everything.

Ebenezer Scrooge?s last chance is one night and three spirits. It?s a life-changing ride through past, present and future as he learns what it means to be human. In true Triad Stage fashion, this faithful adaptation of Dickens? classic story dazzles and delights with bold acting, daring design and spine-tingling special effects. The return of our newest holiday tradition for the Triad is a ghostly tale of Yule-tide cheer, gracious redemption and heart-warming hope for the whole family. This production is sponsored by?VF Corporation.?A Christmas Carol?runs December 2 ? December 23, 2012. Opening night is Friday, December 7, 2012.

?A Christmas Carol?plays a wonderful role in the season of transformation. In some ways, it?s almost a central piece because?A Christmas Carol?is about transformation. Scrooge stands in opposition to the community; he stands in opposition to caring for those who have less than he does; he stands in opposition to opening his heart to any kind of human contact,? says Lane of the Christmas classic. ?It takes a case of tough love to transform him so that he opens his heart and opens his eyes to see others in the community.?

A Christmas Carol?is presented as a special event and is not included in Season Pass packages. However, 2012-2013 Season Passholders have the exclusive opportunity to order advance Holiday Flex Tickets to?A Christmas Carol?at a special reduced rate of $25 each with their Pass purchase or renewal. Otherwise, individual tickets to this show will go on sale?August 6, 2012.
