Global Cruise Industry Announces Two New Safety Policies
On behalf of the global cruise industry, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and the European Cruise Council (ECC) announced that the cruise industry has adopted two new safety policies. These policies, which address issues related to the recording of passenger nationality and the common elements of musters and emergency instructions, result from the Cruise Industry Operational Safety Review launched in January 2012.

The Nationality of Passengers policy was developed in response to the request of governments at the May meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee meeting.? This policy prescribes that the nationality of each passenger onboard is to be recorded and made readily available to search and rescue personnel as appropriate.
Under the Common Elements of Musters and Emergency Instructions policy, member cruise lines have specified 12 common elements that will be communicated to passengers in musters and emergency instructions.? Among those common elements are a description of key safety systems and features and an explanation of emergency routing systems and recognizing emergency exits.? Both policies exceed current international regulatory requirements.

Lawyer on Casey Anthony: Not playing with 'full deck'

Baez's book comes out on July 3.

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Florida mother who was acquitted last year of murdering her 2-year-old daughter had mental health issues that contributed to her habitual lying, the lead attorney in her criminal case says in a new book.

In "Presumed Guilty, Casey Anthony: The Inside Story," Jose Baez said detectives should have realized Casey Anthony had built a "fantasy world," and her lies weren't evidence of guilt but signs of someone with "serious mental health issues."

The 421-page book?is scheduled for release July 3. The Associated Press purchased a copy Tuesday.

Anthony is serving probation for an unrelated charge at an undisclosed location in Florida. She couldn't be reached for comment.

Describing how Anthony led detectives on a wild goose chase, even taking them to Universal Studios where she falsely claimed she had a job, Baez writes, detectives "should have stopped and realized, 'Wait a minute, we're not dealing with someone who is playing with a full deck.'"

Anthony originally told detectives that her daughter, Caylee, was taken by a babysitter in June 2008, and that she didn't report her missing for more than a month because she was searching for the toddler on her own. During Anthony's trial last year, Baez argued that the little girl accidentally drowned in the family swimming pool while Anthony and her father, George, were at home. Anthony panicked from the traumatic effects of being sexually abused by her father and George Anthony hid the body, according to the defense argument.

George Anthony denied the defense's allegations that he abused Casey and helped her cover up Caylee's death.

BenBella Books, who published Baez's book, calls the book an "all-access pass" to the trial, from the day Baez met Anthony for the first time to the weeks the defense spent in the judge's chambers.

"This is NOT a 'Casey Anthony is innocent' book," BenBella said in a press release. "It is a book about the facts, beyond the headlines and off the record."

The book is also partly autobiographical, tracking Baez's journey as a former high school dropout to?a lawyer.

During the trial, prosecutors had contended that Anthony suffocated Caylee with duct tape because she wanted to be free to hit the nightclubs and spend time with her boyfriend. Jurors acquitted Anthony of first-degree murder but convicted her of four misdemeanor counts of lying to investigators.

Baez repeats the allegations of sexual abuse in greater detail in the book, saying it contributed to Anthony's mental health issues. Mark Lippman, an attorney for George Anthony, refused to comment on the book Tuesday because he hadn't read it.

Why Casey Anthony didn't testify
Anthony's defense contemplated having her testify until the very end of the trial but then decided it wasn't necessary. "We had everything to lose and very little to gain," Baez writes.

Baez takes aim at the reporters who covered the case, detectives who investigated it, "groupies" who attached themselves to it and the case's original judge who Baez says filed a complaint against him with the Florida Bar. The complaint was later dropped. Prosecutor Jeff Ashton undergoes the harshest criticism by Baez, who calls him "a coward" for not showing up at Anthony's sentencing for the misdemeanors since he was making the talk shows round after the trial.

Baez is critical of many of Circuit Judge Belvin Perry's rulings during the trial but praises the judge for allowing him to pick a fair jury.

Baez doesn't say where Anthony currently is hiding but he provides a glimpse of the first few hours after she was released from jail last July, time mostly devoted to eluding the media. After escorting Anthony out of the Orange County Jail and into a waiting SUV, Baez rode with Anthony to a parking garage where five cars driven by members of the legal team were waiting. Baez and Anthony got into one car which departed the garage at the same time as the other four. Each car drove in a different direction so reporters following Baez and Anthony wouldn't know which one they were in or where they were heading.

Baez said Anthony's first meal out of jail was a cheeseburger, fries and milkshake from Steak 'n Shake. Baez and Anthony then drove to a municipal airport where a private plane took them to the Florida Panhandle resort community of St. George Island. There, members of their legal team and their families met up with them. Anthony then went to New York until she had to return to Florida to serve her probation sentence.

The three-year case took an emotional toll on Baez, according to his book. He suffered depression after the complaint was filed against him and he found it difficult to find joy in his wife's pregnancy.

Baez also criticizes the way he was portrayed in the media as an inexperienced attorney taking on one of the highest-profile criminal cases in recent memory.

"The public may have been convinced that I was an idiot but I let it all roll off my back," he writes.

In an interview last month about the book, Baez explained why he thought the case attracted so much attention.

"It's probably because Casey is the girl next door," Baez told The Palm Beach Post on May 25.

Baez co-wrote the book with Peter Golenbock, an author who holds a law degree. Golenbock has written seven New York Times bestsellers, according to the publisher, BenBella.

Requests for comment from BenBella were not immediately returned to msnbc.com.

A source told RadarOnline last week that Anthony also hopes to write a book by publishing excerpts from the journal she's kept since Caylee disappeared. Shortly after her trial ended last July, book publishers started expressing interest in her story.

"This is a story with biblical overtones ? a mother and a daughter and a murder. What untold thing happened here?" Robert Gottlieb, president of the Trident Group of book agents, told USATODAY.com last July, adding Trident would be interested in publishing a manuscript from her.

Durable goods orders rebound, led by cars and planes

New orders for products ranging from refrigerators to airplanes rose in May, bouncing back from two consecutive monthly decreases, government data showed Wednesday.

The Commerce Department reported that orders for goods meant to last more than three years increased 1.1 percent last month, after a revised 0.2 percent decrease in April. The rise in orders last month raises hopes that the recovery still has some strength left, but concerns remain that a slowing global economy will stifle orders in future months.

"It was better than expected, which is surprising to see since recent economic reports have been less positive. I'm still concerned we'll see a third summer of an economic deceleration. While this is an important number, news out of Europe is still dominating equity markets," said chief investment officer David Carter of Lenox Wealth Advisors.

Orders for transportation equipment, i.e. planes and automobiles, which have risen in three of the past four months, gained 2.7 percent in May.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast orders for durable goods, rising 0.4 percent after previously being reported as being flat in April.

Excluding transportation, orders rose 0.4 percent after dropping 0.6 percent in April. Economists had forecast this category rising 0.7 percent.

Slower growth in China and a looming recession in the debt-crisis ridden eurozone have taken some of the shine off the domestic manufacturing sector, leaving the economy mired in a soft patch.

Regional surveys of factory activity have mostly shown a weakening in orders this month, a trend that is likely to be highlighted in a report on national manufacturing next week.

Non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for business spending plans, increased 1.6 percent after dropping 1.4 percent in April and snapping two straight months of declines.

Economists had expected this category to rise 1.7 percent after a previously reported 2.1 percent drop.

Shipments of non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, used to calculate equipment and software spending in the gross domestic product report, rose 0.4 percent after declining 1.5 percent in April.

Last month, orders for civilian aircraft rose 4.9 percent and motor vehicles climbed 0.5 percent.

Boeing received eight orders for aircraft, according to the plane maker's website, up from four in April.

Outside transportation, details of the report were fairly mixed, with increases in machinery, electrical equipment and appliances and capital goods orders increasing. Demand for primary metals and computers fell.

As a refresher, the visuals are automatically created from 45-degree aerial imagery and can pick up 3D elements as subtle as trees. Before you go racing to your hometown to see how it looks in 3D, be aware that just a handful of cities and regions exploit that dimension. Besides San Francisco Bay, the full coverage extends to Boulder, Boston, Charlotte, Lawrence, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Portland, San Antonio, San Diego, Santa Cruz and Tampa in the US, with Rome being the lone international hotspot. If that's too few places to visit, there's always the addition of guided tours. Android users can head over Google Play to get the update today; iOS users shouldn't fret, as they'll get the new maps soon.

Next up, in a place as big as some high schools, things sometimes go missing or are misplaced. But have you ever heard of a bomb shelter disappearing? A hidden room was discovered this week at Placer High School in Auburn, California, during a renovation of the school's weight room. Behind a small locked door, there was a stash of survival items around 60 years old.

The emergency supplies of food, water, and medicine brought to mind the Cold War era. Fearing nuclear attacks, communities built bomb shelters in homes and public buildings; they were quite common at the time. However, as the threat faded and the need for the shelters waned, some of them were abandoned or simply forgotten.

A school representative said, "I guess over time people didn't touch it. It's not really an accessible room, so it just kind of got left." So what will happen to the space now? The school says it may install a glass wall and showcase the shelter as a time-capsule, living-history classroom for future students.

BJ Penn and Rory MacDonald volunteer for additional drug testing for UFC 152

BJ Penn, who is expected to fight Rory MacDonald at UFC 152 in Toronto, is leading by example in the campaign to introduce more stringent performance-enhancing drug testing into MMA. He and MacDonald tweeted an agreement to have their September bout sponsored by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association.
Penn tweeted to MacDonald on Tuesday:

According to VADA's website, Penn and MacDonald will be subject to a testing program similar to what Olympic athletes under go. They will be subject to random testing, and have to submit their whereabouts to VADA so drug testers can show up whenever they like to require a test.

If it's truly modeled after the Olympic program, Penn and MacDonald need to be ready for knocks on their door at all times of the day and night. Olympians often tweet when the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency shows up at their door, and it's rarely expected.

Kudos to both men for paying more than lip service to the problem of PEDs in MMA. Penn is a respected veteran, while MacDonald is a young up-and-comer in the sport, and they both recognize the need to be role models. Hopefully, more fighters will follow their lead.

Panel: Docs should screen all patients for obesity

Doctors should check weight and height for all patients to determine if they're obese and refer them to intensive diet and exercise programs if necessary, according to new guidelines from a U.S. government-backed panel.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force said the guidelines echo its 2003 recommendations on screening for obesity, but take into account more recent evidence that adults can lose weight and keep it off with the right help.

"The good news is that even what you might consider to be modest rather than radical weight loss has tremendous health benefits," including lowering diabetes risk and blood pressure, said Susan Curry, a member of the task force and dean of the University of Iowa College of Public Health in Iowa City.

"Losing 5 percent of your body weight has tremendous health benefits, and intensive behavioral counseling programs help you do that and sustain it," Curry told Reuters Health. "Your primary care provider can, we hope, help you to find evidence-based programs."

The need to address weight gain nationally has grown as America tallies the health and economic costs of its obesity epidemic. More than two-thirds of the country's adults can be classified as overweight or obese.

Effective weight-loss programs, Curry said, include both nutrition and exercise support. They should help people address any barriers they have to making - and maintaining - changes in their lifestyle.

Obesity is defined as having a body mass index (a ratio of weight in relation to height) of 30 or above. That's equal to a 5 foot 6 inch tall person weighing 186 pounds or a 6 foot person at 221 pounds.

In evidence considered by the task force, intensive behavioral programs with at least 12 sessions typically helped people lose between nine and 15 pounds, or about 6 percent of their original weight.

Those types of programs may also have an effect on diabetes risk, blood pressure and stomach fat, according to the new guidelines, published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. But there are still questions about any long-term impacts those interventions have on heart disease and death, for example.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved orlistat - marketed as Xenical and alli - for weight loss, but Curry and her colleagues said there wasn't enough information about how well people fare when they go off the drug to make any recommendations related to its use.

Robert Klesges, a preventive medicine researcher from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, said once people stop taking orlistat, they tend to gain back any weight they lost.

With behavioral interventions including lifestyle changes, "relapse" tends to be smaller, he told Reuters Health.

Klesges, who wasn't involved in the new study, recommended people trying to lose extra weight incorporate meal replacements into their diet and weigh themselves regularly.

"Exercise is very important, (but) it's much more important for weight-loss maintenance than weight loss," he said. Some of the benefits of exercise, he said, come from the fact that it's pretty difficult to eat a candy bar while running on a track, and people often don't have much of an appetite for snacking right after they work out.

The task force didn't review bariatric surgery as a potential intervention for obese people in the new guidelines.

According to data from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, about 220,000 people had those procedures in 2009.

Apple tones down Mac virus immunity claims after infections

Apple has made some changes to how it describes Macs' resistance to viruses following a wave of infections in April. The Flashback botnet affected hundreds of thousands of computers, the vast majority of which were running OS X, so the longstanding claim that "It doesn?t get PC viruses" was clearly no longer tenable.

The changes were first noticed by the blog Naked Security, which posted before-and-after screenshots of the feature description in question. Apple removed the outright claims of immunity and also minimized mentions of users not having to do anything to protect their computer, since both of those things were shown to be less than true during the malware attacks.

Apple has been taking security more seriously recently following some well-publicized breaches of its software. The success of their platforms in recent years has made them a more prominent target, as the Flashback malware showed most recently. Safari and iOS tend to be easy pickings at hacker gatherings, but Graham Cluly, the blogger who posted the information, writes that Apple is starting to take the topic more seriously.

Of course, the most serious security risk for any platform is usually the user, so regardless of your OS, you should be aware of current threats and relevant security updates, and always keep your browser and plugins up to date.

Apple sends iOS 6 beta 2 to developers

The wait between iOS 6's unveiling and its planned fall release just got a little bit shorter, as Apple has just pushed out beta 2. If you're in the developer crowd that can try it out, don't expect any revelations: the primarily focus is on the bug fixes that nudge the software closer to a final release. As in past years, multiple additional betas are expected between now and the time the iOS 6 is ready to come to the general public, so there's likely still lots of room left for Apple to polish the release to a shine. Those paid up on their developer accounts can grab the update through the usual means and see just how much luster has been added since WWDC.

Here is where the Information about Demon's that we've collected goes, PM me with the Info and I'll put it all into a super-long Post, or maybe a few posts, but if you really feel the need to, you can post in here yourself. Just make sure it's got a nice amount of info for a nice long post, and eventually we'll end up with a rather large index about those hilariously unnatural residents of Hell.

First off, the Ranks:

Demon King's and Demon Queens' have Ranks, and I'll go over these now.

Basically, the Demons are ranked on power, and whenever one is killed or banished, another takes their place. From the way Brenhin and Loki are, in comparison to Illusion, they'd probably be, in the WDL's Ranking System, fairly close to the middle, if not being just above them.

E Demons: The weakest and are usually just pawns for higher up Demons. These are the lackeys, btw.
D Demons: Fairly Powerful, and usually capable of independant thought, but they're usually still forced to serve a higher power.
C Demons: Demons that are almost able to be Demon Kings, but they either have a major weakness, or they're just not strong enough. Still kinda lackeys.
B Demons: These would be the weaker Demon Kings and the Children, until they unlock their full potential, of course, then they'd probably go up to A Rank or such, maybe even S Rank.
A Demons: These are the majority of the Demon Kings and Queens. Mostly fairly powerful, but can still be killed fairly easily. Brenhin could go here, but he might also be an S Demon.
S Demons: Stronger Demon Kings that the WDL knows are a massive threat, such as Loki and Crisis (possibly?). The Council are still a ton stronger than an S Rank, so they're still able to order the rest of Hell around.
SS Demons: Yep, the Council, such as Illusion. Also, the Horsemen are here too, except they're disguising themselves as weaker for now.
X Demons: Demons that the WDL know are the msot dangerous beings ever to grace the mortal realm, and we all know who this is. There's only usually ever one X Demon, just like the Archknight, and it's obviously the Devil this time around.

Yet after two centuries as the front porch of a major metropolis, it also hides an ugly secret below the surface: Garbage now blankets the seabed around Sydney, some of it nearly as old as the city itself.

All this trash causes a variety of local problems, environmentalists say, such as leaching toxic chemicals into seawater or tempting marine animals to eat tiny bits of plastic. And it may feed a much broader environmental threat, too, since some of the debris washes out to sea and could ultimately join the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

But thanks to a coalition of local divers and environmentalists, Sydney Harbor's garbage problem is undergoing a rare ? albeit slow ? change of fortune. As the BBC and Yahoo News report, Sydney-area divers have begun volunteering their time and talents to manually remove trash from the harbor floor, tackling a massive problem that has festered behind the scenes for nearly two centuries.

"The stuff on the bottom has been accumulating for 200 years, and it's only now we're really trying to pull it out in any sort of quantity," local diver Dave Thomas tells Australia's Seven News. "It's been out of sight and out of mind."

The effort is led by two Sydney-based conservation groups: Eco Divers, which conducts marine research and rehab missions via scuba diving, and the Two Hands Project, which rallies volunteers for beach cleanups and other environmental ventures. As Thomas tells Seven News, this kind of work comes naturally to people who spend a lot of time in the ocean. "As a diver you see this stuff, and if it was on land you would be disgusted," he says, "and you would do something about it."

Loose garbage remains a problem in urban areas worldwide, but coastal cities face unique challenges: Their own trash can hide offshore, either lurking in place or washing into ocean gyres, and they can also receive transoceanic trash from other cities, such as Japan's tsunami debris now reaching U.S. shores. Sydney's waste woes are especially severe, both for the local environment and for the Pacific at large, since ocean currents can carry debris to New Zealand and beyond, potentially feeding garbage patches in the North Pacific. The local government hasn't ignored the issue, though ? it employs a harbor cleanup team, for example, which began boosting its productivity in the 1990s by using prison inmates to help it collect trash.

But the prison-labor program was nixed in late 2010, and as the Sydney Morning Herald reported earlier this year, trash removal from the harbor has fallen since then ? even as heavy rains washed more debris out to sea. State cleanup crews collected just 2,284 cubic meters (80,658 cubic feet) of waste in Sydney Harbor during the last financial year, the paper reported, down 18 percent from the year before. This was partly due to other factors, namely the temporary loss of a key cleanup vessel, but losing so much labor has likely also played a role.

"One can draw the conclusion that there would be more litter in the harbor," Peter McLean, the New South Wales director of Keep Australia Beautiful, told the Herald in January. "I hate to see programs like this not continue in some form. It would certainly be very detrimental." Yet despite such setbacks, the NSW government maintains its stated goal of having Australia's lowest per capita litter count by 2016.

Eco Divers' and Two Hands' cleanup efforts could help with that, but it won't be easy. As the BBC reports, some of Sydney's marine debris is big and unwieldy, such as old bicycles and bathtubs, and even smaller objects like plastic bags, bottles and fishing lures are labor-intensive to remove by hand. And while it's hard enough to collect two centuries' worth of trash from the bottom of a busy harbor, more than 900 metric tons of garbage also washes back onto local beaches every year, much of it becoming trapped on rocky shores, Seven News reports. Sydney cleanup crews cover some 12,000 acres of waterways and 170 miles of shoreline, according to the Herald.

It is a daunting task, but as Two Hands' Dean Cropp tells the BBC, any progress is worth the trouble. "Unless someone cleans it up, it could be there for years," he says. "It could be there for hundreds of years ? doing damage the whole time."
